Big, Big weekend!  Make sure you get out and enjoy some great live music!

Hello, Central Coast!

Hard to believe another week has flown by! We're just a little over 2 weeks away from daylight savings kicking in, and before you know it we'll all be dancing in the sunshine with all these fantastic outdoors concerts and festivals all summer long.

This weekend has some very good stuff. Let's take a look at some of the picks:

Friday night's BIG show is at the Fremont Theatre, where the fine folks at Good Medicine and Numbskull presents Brett Dennen.  This will be a special treat for all his local fans, making a stop right here in SLO along the way on his World Tour.  There are still tickets left, and you can get them right here OR get down to Boo Boo Records!

Another great option is to head out to the coast & check out Jill Knight.  She'll be playing this week's concert at the Blue Sky Bistro in Morro Bay.  It goes from 6:00 - 8:00, and you'll want to get there early to grab a table.

Paul's Picks - February 13, 2015

Valentines weekend!  Share your love of live music!

Love is in the air...  Seems that we all love going to check out shows and sharing with friends.  Pretty cool with Valentines Day on a Saturday this year.   No shortage of fun stuff to do this weekend.  Here are the highlights:

Friday night's pick goes to Captain Nasty, who always go the extra mile to bring you fresh & fun tunes, and an energetic set.  They're playing down at Mr. Ricks in Avila.  I'd suggest grabbing your sweetie and heading down early and getting in on a gorgeous 80 degree beach day, having, grab some dinner, and hang around for music which kicks off at 9:00.

Saturday has a couple of picks:  Castoro Cellars has a Valentines wood-fired pizza party with music by the Belmores.  Tickets are running thin, so get them quick here!  in SLO, the Steynberg Gallery is featuring a Valentines concert with Damon Castillo and Reese Galido.   The Gipsy All-Stars will also be over at Luna Red, which would be a super fun, classy option.

Sunday has a couple great shows: First, SLO Brew has Paul Thorn.  He puts on a great show & sells out the Brew every time he comes to town.  So... If you want to check it, get online or over to Boo Boo Records ASAP to grab tickets.  Also - Judge Mike and the Lawless has a CD release party over at the Monday Club.  He's got a lineup of heavy hitters and this promises to be a great show. Details here

Finally, I'm very excited to announce a new concert / event series:  Beer at the Pier!  If you know much about me, you know I love Baywood Park and taking in the sunsets from the beach & pier.   Mondays have always been a great day in Baywood as folks come from all over the county for the Baywood Farmers Market, happening from 2:00 to 4:30.  NOW, here's the new plan for Mondays:

After Farmers Market, The Back Bay Cafe will open up for happy hour and serve cold tap beers, soft drinks, and fire up the espresso machine for the perfect way to enjoy these legendary Baywood Sunsets.  I'll also be putting together a concert series for your to round our your sensual  experience:  Sounds, sights. and suds!  BUT WAIT: There's more!  We've just installed a world class sand beach volleyball court in behind the Back Bay Inn and we'll have a volleyball tournament starting at 2:00PM.  All the Baywood restaurants will be having some kind of dinner special - La Palapa Mexican Restaurant, Baywood Ale House, Noi's award winning Thai food, and Noi's new seafood restaurant: The Naked Sea,  And after sunset, the Baywood Ale House will be the place to be for some great acoustic music.  Who says the weekend has to stop on Sunday!?!

The first "Baywood Big Monday will be happening  this Monday, Feb. 16!  Live on the pier will be 2 bands: the Miller Brothers and The Gipsy All-Stars.  Please come and join us and let's breathe a little life into my sweet little neighborhood!  See you at the pier!

Paul's Picks - February 5, 2015

“The party of the week has to be the Zongo All-Stars show this Saturday...”
— Glen Starkey, SLO New Times - Feb. 5, 2015

February is a big party time for San Luis Obispo.  Although not nearly as much as the good old days when Mardi Gras used to actually be a massive thing around here, the BIG PICK this weekend is the Cali Carnaval show at SLO Brew on Saturday.  In the spirit of Mardi Gras but the flavor of Carnaval in Brazil, Zongo All-Stars team up with Samba Loca and pro Brazilian dancer Sidney Nicol of Feathers and Fire Samba Dance in Santa Cruz for an outrageously fun evening!  Check out all the info here and get down and join in the fun!

For those of you who want to take this seriously and show up with all the hot Brazilian dance moves, Sidney is hosting a Samba dance class with live drumming from Samba Loca earlier in the day.  If you act quickly, you can still get in on the fun.

SLO Brew is also the place to be on Friday and Sunday. Friday has Pinback, the popular indie rock band out of San Diego.  Sunday has Abbey Road - a national touring act as a tribute to the Beatles.  They get great reviews, so expect a great show.

Friday night seems to be an especially fun night to head out to Morro Bay.  I'm recommending you start out early at the Blue Sky Bistro for some great food & drink while you check out in intimate indoor concert with Kenny Blackwell and Wally Barnick.  That goes from 6:00 to 8:00, wrapping up just in time to go check out Guy Budd's new CD release party at the Libertine Pub - one block north on the waterfront.  If you still have some energy, just a few more steps north will take you to the Otter Rock Cafe, where Billy Foppiano and the Mighty Croondogs will take you up to midnight.

The PAC will be the place to be Sunday and Monday.   Sunday is the the Second City's 55th Anniversary performance. These are the new rising stars of the comedy business, and should be amazing.  Monday is the acclaimed performance of Memphis, the Musical.  It looks great, too.

Be sure to stay up to date with Big BIG SLO and we'll keep you in the know.

Happy weekend & hope to see you all out at SLO Brew on Saturday!

Paul's Picks - January 30, 2015

Hello, weekend!

I'm sure you've all worked and played hard all week, and are itching to get out there & enjoy a great Central Coast weekend.   As always, there are tons of fun things to do.  Where to start...

The BIG BIG PICK this weekend is over at the Madonna Expo Center as Good Medicine Presents The Devil Makes Three! This happens tonight!   It is close to sold out, so if you're looking for the hot ticket, grab one online here or get over to Boo Boo Records ASAP!

Tomorrow night has lots of options.  Here are some good picks:

Also - a reminder for next weekend:  Big Big SLO is producing a FANTASTIC  show at SLO Brew on Saturday 2/7!  Kick off Carnaval week with our "Cali Carnaval" show.  It features Zongo All-Stars, Samba Loca, Feathers & Fire Samba Dance, and some very special guests & surprises that we can''t quite announce yet.  We've even got a Samba Dance workshop earlier in the day by Sidney Nicol so you can come prepared with some hot new moves! Tickets are $10 in advance ($12 at the door), it's 21+, and opens at 7:30PM.  This will be outrageous, so be sure to mark your calendar, buy your tickets, & tell your friends!

Have fun & I'll see you at the show!

Paul's Picks! January 23, 2015

Paul's Picks!  BIG weekend of fun on the Central Coast!

Once again, we count our blessings to live in such an amazing area with a bunch of great entertainment options.   Here are some of the top picks this weekend:

First up, the BIG show this weekend is Trombone Shorty at the PAC!  If you've ever had the pleasure of catching his show, you know that he delivers a very satisfying set every time!  He knocked it out of the park last time he was here for the 2014 Avila Blues Festival.  The PAC will be a great venue to see him.  Opening the show tonight is the Record Company out of Los Angeles.  They look like a lot of fun - be sure to get there early!

Saturday has some fun options - a little something for everyone.  The SLO Blues Society is featuring Texan powerhouse blues man Sugaray Rayford at the Vets Hall.  Should be great.  Also happening Saturday is Agent Orange at SLO Brew, for those surf punk aficionados out there...  And for a more intimate fun time, local bands Chunk and Explode the Machine will be at Creekside Brewing Co.

Sunday has an interesting opportunity to check out the amazing sounds of the Forbes Pipe Organ at the Performing Arts Center.  As one of today’s most prominent concert organists, Christian Elliott will be accompanying short silent films by Buster Keaton and Laurel & Hardy as well as a feature film starring local silent screen star, Colleen Moore.

Finally. Big Big SLO is producing CaliCarnaval at SLO Brew on February 7.  This will be an outrageous, off the hook Brazilian Samba Dance party, along with some great new tunes fresh out of the Zongo lab.  This show features the fun Afro-Caribbean sounds of Zongo All-Stars, currently voted best band in SLO County for the past 2 years.  Special guests Samba Loca, the hot new 10 piece Samba drum ensemble, will join in the fun for a big set in the middle of the show, accompanied by professional Brazilian Samba dancer Sidney Nicol.   And just to make sure you are fully prepared to party to your fullest - Sidney is hosting a Brazilian dance workshop earlier in the day, featuring live drumming by Samba Loca.  Participants will have the option to join Sidney on stage to try out the new moves at the show.  Click below for info on both events:

Enjoy the weekend & stay safe out there! Cheers!

Paul's Picks! January 14, 2015

What's Happening in SLO County this week?

Seems like there's no "off season" for fun & events on the Central Coast, although the summer sure adds a ton more outdoor events.   My hat goes off to all the indoor venues still making it happen year round (you know who you are!).

This weekend starts with a VERY robust Friday evening.  A few great options:

SLO Brew has a couple great shows this weekend.  Randy Rogers is there on Friday.  If you didn't already get your tickets, you're out of luck - it's sold out!  But fear not - if you act quickly, you can still make it down to Boo Boo Records & grab some tix for what will surely be an epic show on Saturday: the Budos Band!  Our friends Mailk and Manuel will be spinning a col vinyl set to warm you up.

Heads up on another couple of shows coming up soon:

  • Next Friday, Trombone Shorty will be at the PAC.  I've seen him 3 times live (Zongo even opened up for him a couple years back at SLO Brew), and each time he killed it!  Tickets are running thin, but there are still a few left, so grab some & buckle up for an awesome night!
  • On 2/7 Saturday you'll want to be at SLO Brew to celebrate Cali Carnaval!  One week in front of the Brazilian Carnaval, Zongo All-Stars and Samba Loca team up with special guests, dancers, and more.

That's it for now.  Have fun out there & be safe!

Paul's Picks - January 8, 2015

Happy New Year, SLO!

Well, another year is in the books, and another great year of fun & music has already started with a BANG!  I hope you all had a bunch of fun on New Year's Eve.  Big Big SLO produced a great show out in Los Osos with Zongo All-Stars, Solstice, and the Monroe.  We'd love to hear about your New Year's shenanigans as well...  Hit us up on Facebook and share pics & stories!

For this weekend, SLO Brew has a great lineup.  On Friday, you'll want to check out the Dustbowl Revival.  They played at Live Oak 2014 and just about brought the roof down for the Friday night dance at the Hot Licks Stage.  Opening the show will be local favorites, Tipsy Gypsies, so get there early & pace yourselves.  Saturday Night, Proxima Parada will be  coming to SLO Brew with some new tunes and a bunch of fun.  Opening for them is Sparrows Gate.

Creekside Brewery has a cool show on Saturday with the Monroe, and opening that show will be new up-comers, the Earthtones.  They've created a buzz out on the coast & should be fun.

Steve Key with his Songwriters at Play program has a couple of great shows happening this weekend:  Friday night has an evening of Americana music featuring local hot pickers Kenny Blackwell & Dorian Michael, plus L.A.'s Nathan McEuen. Special guest vocalist Nicole Stromsoe opens the show at 7pm.  Saturday night is a big one over at Sternberg Gallery:  A tribute to Jude Johnstone, a great local songwriter. The lineup includes Bob & Wendy, Ynana Rose, Jill Knight, Nicole Stromsoe, Karen Tyler, Holly Ann Phillips, Aaron Porter, Steve Key, Jude's daughter Ray Duncan, and a closing set by Jude herself.

Take a trip down to the Clark Center on Friday and check out the Peking Acrobats! They perform daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs; do treacherous wire-walking, trick-cycling, precision tumbling, somersaulting and gymnastics. Sounds pretty crazy!

Whatever you end up doing, I'm wishing you a super fun & safe weekend.  Cheers!

Season's Greetings from BIG BIG SLO!

My, oh my! I can't believe we're wrapping up 2014 already.  It's been a great big year of live music on the Central Coast, and t looks like all the major players in the scene are putting together some fantastic events for us for 2015.  Stay tuned & we'll be getting the news out to you as all the events are announced.  We've already seen Vina Robles announce their first show, Otter Productions has already announced the Avila Blues Fest lineup, and Good Medicine Presents has committed to seeing the music through at SLO Brew until the building comes crashing down, as well as producing other great shows at the Fremont, Madonna Expo Center, and beyond.  Next year will be great, so we've got a lot to look forward to.  Winter Solstice is just a few days away, which means the days start getting longer! Woo hoo!

For this weekend, it is THE time to break out those holiday sweaters & jump into some great events.  Tonight - Get to SLO BREW for the Five Man Jingle Jam, featuring Damon Castillo, Dan Curcio, Rolf Gehrung, Joe Koenig, and Kenny Lee Lewis jamming on some holiday tunes.  Friday has local funksters Captain Nasty with the Monroe and Samba Loca out at TapIt Brewery for the Ugly Sweater party.  This should sell out, so try to grab tix in advance.

On Saturday, Creekside Brewing has Wordsauce for their Funky Sweater party! These guys have actually made their own limited edition funky sweaters for purchase, so you may want to show up early for one!

Sunday you can check out Cal Poly Arts event at the Spanos Theatre at the PAC: Men Are From Mars, Women are from Venus.  Use PROMO code "Mars" and get 50% if there are any tickets left.  Should be great!

As a kid, I grew up back in New England, so ice skating was definitely part of the culture.  Here's another cool reason to break out your sweater:  Madonna Expo Center has been transformed into a skating rink, and it opens Friday, 12/19!  Check it out here!

Have you already figured out what you're doing for New Year's Eve??  Big Big SLO's TOP PICK for New Year's Eve goes out to the Zongo All-Stars Time Traveler Ball in Los Osos.  It was a blazing success last year, and is predicted to sell out.   It's a costume party, and you can come from any point in time you'd like (past or future), but just not now...   It's an easy $25 and you'll have a blast!  Details and tickets here!

Be safe & see you at at the show!  Cheers!

Happy Holidays! Buckle up for fun...

Hello, Central Coast!

It's December, and a time for celebration, friends, family, parties, and no shortage of great entertainment picks.   This weekend we've got a lot going on - hard to get it all in!

Friday night is exploding with options for great stuff.  SLO Brew has an amazing show with Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola - always a winner.  Friday night at Cuesta, the Jazz Ensembles have their winter concert.  If you haven't been out to a show at the CPAC, I'm strongly recommending you do. It's a fantastic room, top notch talent, and cheap!  If you're around the North County, try to get into D'Anbino Cellars Tasting Room to check out Songwriters at Play's show featuring "Banjo Babe" Erin Inglish with Dylan Johnson, local heavyweight on bass.  Sharing the bill are Sam Misner and Megan Smith - a touring duo you'll want to check out.

Saturday is the Civic Ballet's presentation of the Nutcracker - an amazing show if you can still get tickets.

Sunday you'll want to get to SLO Brew for Hirie, a new emerging pop star out of Hawaii, and the Wheeland Brothers will open.

Monday has a great production back at the Performing Arts Center: An Irish Christmas.  It's just about sold out, so grab some tickets & see you there!

I've been receiving so many suggestions and requests for show and performances every week that I've decided to add a new feature to Paul's Picks:   People's Pick of the week.  I'll be setting up a way for you to make your suggestion on the HOTTEST thing happening for the upcoming weekend.  The most votes for whichever event it is will be featured, and maybe we can even get score a pair of tickets to that event as a giveaway...

Thanks so much for helping to build this community online & in person.  Wishing each of you a very happy holiday season and looking forward to an amazing 2015!  Cheers!

BIG FUN to kick off the Holiday Season!

Hello, Central Coast!  Looks like a great weekend with plenty to do!

For starters, SLO Brew will be super fun tonight & tomorrow with a couple of great shows.  Tonight, the Young Dubliners will get the crowd all fired up, and warming them up will be local funmeisters Truth About Seafood.   For Friday night SLO Brew has the Dead Volts, and Saturday you can check out The Grouch & Eligh (of Living Legends) for their "Grouch Stole Christmas" show.

Also - Songwriters at Play presents a BIG show down at the Shell Cafe in Pismo Beach:  A Tribute to Tom Waits!  It goes from 6:30-9:30 and features at least 8 acts.  Click here to get all the details.

Saturday has a cool variety of stuff.   There's a fantastic jazz show at Unity Concert Hall as the SLO Jazz Federation presents Steel House.  This is a rare West Coast performance featuring three world class instrumentalists: Edward Simon on piano, Scott Colley on bass and Brian Blade on drums. Don't miss it, unless you're in the mood for blues - in which case you'll want to check out the SLO Blues Society's concert with Cafe R&B and Back Bay Betty.   Or, if you're in the mood for a little festivity and fresh air, you'll want to head out to Morro Bay and check out the Lighted Boat Parade.  You can check it from all the over the Embarcadero, but I'm recommending the Blue Sky Bistro at Marina Square, where you can have great beverages with a fantastic viewing spot.

Sunday has some traditional Hawaiian Music with the new up and coming group Hu 'Ewa.  Check them out at the SLO Grange Hall. Also - if you happened to be out at the coast, stop by Baywood for Rod Baker's Glass Studio for a free demo and Holiday Open House.   Have fun out there, and be sure to learn more about all these happenings at our Upcoming Events page!

Hello, Weekend!

SLO County!  We're in for a nice treat this weekend with some different style events.    SLO Brew has some great shows, starting tonight with Lucero and tomorrow with Mother Hips, who always pack the house and put on a fantastic show!  Be sure to grab your tix and get there early for Joe Koenig who's got some fresh new stuff for you.

We seem to have hit a hot spot with some interesting collaborative music and dance performance.  First is a really great art collective intended to max out your senses.  The Sukha Center in Avila Valley will be the place to be on Saturday night, featuring some Flamenco dance by La Gitane, musical accompaniment by Tropical Brazilian guitarist Jon Stephen and photographic imagery projected on the walls by Lance Kinney.  This is called Noches de Bohemia, and will be great.  It's a small room, so jump on tickets ASAP if you want to go.

Also on dance, Steynberg Gallery has Adelaide Marcus performing some wild Middle Eastern tribal fusion dance with live music accompaniment by Timo Beckwith, Andrew Wise, and Daniel Cimo.  I saw the show last time she was in town, and it was really good.  Highly recommended for something completely different!   Also, the Performing Arts Center has Cal Poly's Arab Music Ensemble at the Harmon Hall on Saturday night.  So great to see so much collaboration between dancers, musicians, and production allin one weekend.

To close things out, you might want to check out Cal Poly's Bandfest 2014, featuring Cal Poly's Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and the Mustang Marching Band in an evening of bold and powerful works.  Great opportunity to check out all 3 bands in one setting.

Thanks to all for helping to build the Big Big SLO Community - see you out at the show!
