RECAP: 11th Annual Zongo Yachting Cup!

On Friday, August 9, 2019 the 11th Annual Zongo Yachting Cup was ran. This annual ocean race / cruise from Morro Bay to Avila Beach has become a favorite among Central Coast sailors, and has become the most coveted ocean sailing trophy in the area.

The story: With 10 boats competing this year, we found ourselves in a somewhat unusual situation: After a nice start and a gentle building breeze, someone shut off the wind machine and the fleet spent 2-3 hours bobbing & praying for wind. Ultimately, everyone headed back to the barn except the 4 boats made it around Point Buchon:

Monohulls: Fear Knot - Holder 20 (Kevin Williams) and Janina - Santa Cruz 27 (Mark Hilden & John Krossa)

Multihulls: Nai'a Ioi’ Ioi’ - Prindle 16 (Chrissy Osborne) and Tunnel Vision - 42’ Hughes Cat (Nick Del Giorgio)

The wind made a massive switch and built quickly to 25+ with gusts to 35. Janina was surfing fast down the swells and hitting speeds in excess of 13 kts. Fear Knot was holding steady and running a good race not far behind. Ultimately, the race shook out like this:

PHRF:

1st Place: Fear Knot - Holder 20 (Kevin Williams) PHRF 186
Elapsed time: 4:50:30 / Corrected Time: 3:46:01
2nd Place: Janina -Santa Cruz 27 (Mark Hilden & John Krossa)
Elapsed time: 4:40:39 / Corrected Time: 3:52:49
Difference: 6:47 Corrected time.

MUlTIHULL:

1st Place: Nai'a Ioi’ Ioi’ - Prindle 16 (Chrissy Osborne)
Elapsed time: 4:44:00
2nd Place: Tunnel Vision - 42’ Hughes Cat (Nick Del Giorgio)
Elapsed time: 5:07:00
